La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, Mexico, is renowned for its breathtaking beaches, vibrant marine life, and stunning natural landscapes. Whether you’re seeking relaxation, adventure, or the perfect spot for water activities, La Paz offers an array of pristine beaches that cater to every traveler’s desires.

5 Best Beaches in La Paz Mexico

1. Playa Balandra

Playa Balandra is undoubtedly the most famous beach in La Paz. This beach is often referred to as the “crown jewel” of La Paz due to its crystal-clear waters, soft white sands, and the iconic mushroom-shaped rock formation, “El Hongo.” Located just a short drive from downtown La Paz, Balandra offers a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Activities at Playa Balandra

1. Kayaking and Paddleboarding: The calm, shallow waters of Balandra make it an ideal spot for kayaking and paddleboarding. You can rent equipment from local vendors and explore the bay at your own pace. The experience of gliding over the clear water while surrounded by breathtaking scenery is truly unforgettable.

2. Snorkeling: Balandra’s crystal-clear waters are perfect for snorkeling. You can observe a variety of marine life, including colorful fish, rays, and even the occasional sea turtle. The rocky outcrops near the shore provide excellent snorkeling opportunities.

3. Hiking and Exploring: Balandra is surrounded by picturesque hiking trails that offer stunning panoramic views of the bay and the surrounding desert landscape. One popular trail leads to a viewpoint where you can capture incredible photos of the beach and the famous mushroom rock.

4. Picnicking and Sunbathing: Balandra’s pristine sands are perfect for lounging and soaking up the sun. There are shaded palapas (thatched-roof shelters) available for picnics, providing a comfortable spot to enjoy a meal while taking in the beautiful surroundings.

2. Playa Tecolote: A Beach for Adventure Seekers

Located just a short drive from Playa Balandra, Playa Tecolote is another popular choice in La Paz’s beach collection. Tecolote is known for its expansive shoreline, vibrant atmosphere, and stunning views of Isla Espíritu Santo. When we were there this beach was hopping! The bars and beachfront restaurants were packed and the band was playing.

1. Water Sports: Playa Tecolote is a hub for water sports enthusiasts. You can rent jet skis, windsurfing equipment, and kayaks to explore the open waters. The steady winds make it an excellent spot for windsurfing, while jet skiing offers an adrenaline-pumping experience.

2. Boat Tours to Isla Espíritu Santo: One of the highlights of visiting Tecolote is the opportunity to take boat tours to Isla Espíritu Santo. These tours often include snorkeling stops, where you can swim with sea lions and explore vibrant coral reefs. The island itself is a UNESCO World Heritage site, known for its unique landscapes and abundant wildlife.

3. Beachfront Dining: Playa Tecolote is home to several beachfront restaurants and bars where you can enjoy delicious seafood and refreshing drinks. Dining with your toes in the sand while gazing at the turquoise waters is an experience you won’t forget.

4. Relaxation and Sunbathing: Despite its adventurous offerings, Tecolote also provides ample space for relaxation. The wide beach allows for plenty of room to lay out a towel, soak up the sun, and take in the stunning views of the island and the Sea of Cortez.

3. Playa El Saltito: Virgin Beach

El Saltito beach is my second favorite beach in La Paz, next to Playa Balandra.

It’s not very often that something can be described as a “virgin beach” in the age of Instagram, but shockingly this is it! Not only is this beach I disturbed, it’s also insanely beautiful. Just thinking about it still blows my mind.

Getting to this beach involves a 3 hour drive from Cabo to La Paz, and then another 35 minutes from there. Also, it is important to note the last two miles have to be hiked or driven on a bumpy dirt road.

4. Playa El Coromuel: A Beach with Modern Amenities

Playa El Coromuel is one of the most accessible beaches in La Paz, located just a short distance from the city center. This beach is known for its modern amenities, family-friendly atmosphere, and stunning sunset views. El Coromuel is a great choice for those who want to enjoy a day at the beach without venturing too far from downtown.
