Top 10 Things to do in Grindelwald Switzerland

Grindelwald Switzerland
Grindelwald, Switzerland

There is a reason Switzerland is what immediately comes to mind when you think of epic mountain views – trust me, the country delivers. This is especially true in Grindelwald, Switzerland. The area feels like it was pulled straight out of a fairytale! Not only is it gorgeous with its stunning mountain views, but there are a ton of fun, unique, and adventurous things to do there.

If you’re considering planning a trip, read on as I’ve listed my favorite things to do in Grindelwald. Here’s what you shouldn’t miss and how to get there.

How to Get to Grindelwald

Grindelwald is easily accessible by train, car, or bus, depending on your preference. It is a two hour drive from Zurich, but if you decide to take the train or the bus it won’t be too much longer. To get there, we rented a car and drove. We didn’t actually stay in Grindelwald, but instead stayed in an Airbnb in Interlaken, which is about a 30-minute drive to Grindelwald.

  • By Train: The most scenic and convenient way to reach Grindelwald is by train. From Zurich, take a train to Interlaken Ost (roughly 2 hours), where you can transfer to a local train that takes you directly to Grindelwald in about 30 minutes. The Swiss rail system (SBB) is efficient and offers stunning views along the way (also quite cost effective).
  • By Car: If you’re driving, take the A8 motorway to Interlaken, then follow the signs to Grindelwald. The journey from Zurich or Lucerne takes around 2 hours. Keep in mind that parking in Grindelwald can be limited, especially during peak tourist seasons. With the public transportation options being so good, many people opt to not take a car. Because of this, when we’ve priced rental cars we’ve found them to be a lot cheaper than other destinations.
  • By Bus: There are bus services from Interlaken to Grindelwald if you’d prefer the most budget-friendly option, although the train is generally the preferred mode of transport for its comfort and scenic route.

Best Things to do in Grindelwald

1. Explore the First Cliff Walk

The First Cliff Walk in Grindelwald is one of my favorite experiences I had in Switzerland. They built a suspended metal walkway off the sit of a mountain cliff. Don’t look down if you get woozy as you can see directly through the metal grating and all the way down the mountain. The sheer drop beneath and the towering mountain peaks all around was absolutely breathtaking.

The platform at the end of the walk juts out into thin air, giving you a panoramic view of the Swiss Alps that feels unreal. I recommend going early to avoid crowds, and make sure to wear sturdy shoes—the walkway is easy, but you’ll want to explore more of the surrounding trails afterward. The gondola ride up from Grindelwald First station is quick and offers stunning views on the way!

Once you are up at the top the actual Cliff Walk is free.

2. Hike to Bachalpsee Lake

The hike to Bachalpsee Lake in Grindelwald is easily one of my favorites. It is one of the most beautiful and accessible hikes in the region. It’s about an hour each way from the First station (and First Cliff Walk). The trail is gorgeous—think green meadows, snow-capped mountains, and fresh alpine air.

After your couple mile hike you’ll arrive at the lake. The Bachalpsee Lake water is so clear and reflective that the surrounding peaks look like they’re painted on the surface. It’s a pretty easy hike for anyone with a basic fitness level. It’s also a great spot for a picnic. Just don’t forget your camera—the scenery is unreal!

What to bring: Comfortable hiking shoes, snacks, and water, as the alpine air can be crisp and energizing.

3. Ride the Gondola from Grindelwald to First

You can hike from Grindelwald to First, but that isn’t the hike I recommend. It’s long, very steep, and doesn’t have views that are quite as stunning as others. Instead, you should take the gondola up to First instead. It’s an experience in itself!

The ride starts right from the heart of Grindelwald. As soon as you board, you’re treated to stunning panoramic views of the valley below and towering peaks ahead.

The journey takes about 25 minutes. You’ll get an incredible perspective of the Swiss Alps, with lush green meadows and distant waterfalls adding to the scenery. It’s a little jarring to be suspended so high off of the ground, but the ride is smooth and comfortable.

Two warnings – the lines for the gondola can take a bit of time, so make sure you plan ahead to allow yourself up to 30 minutes to wait in line. Second, wear sunscreen as the sun can beam straight into your gondola dispelling all shade. The gondola ride is the perfect way to start your day at Grindelwald First!

4. Grindelwald-First Adventures

If you’re looking for thrills, Grindelwald-First also has an array of adrenaline-pumping activities. After taking the gondola up, you can try zip-lining with the First Flyer, speeding down the mountain on a bike with Mountain Cart, or even soaring through the air on the First Glider (more on each of these below).

Each of these activities offers a unique way to experience the beauty of the Swiss Alps while getting your heart racing.

Good to know: All activities are located around the First summit station, so you can easily try a few in one day, and decide which once you see them in person.

5. Visit the Jungfraujoch – The Top of Europe

Want to go up even higher mountains? A visit to Jungfraujoch, known as the “Top of Europe,” is an unforgettable experience. From Grindelwald, take the cogwheel train up through the mountains to reach Europe’s highest railway station. At 3,454 meters (11,332 feet), the views of the Aletsch Glacier and the surrounding peaks are once again, simply breathtaking.

You can explore the Ice Palace, walk out onto the glacier, or take in the 360° panoramic views.

Tip: Bring warm clothes, even in summer, as temperatures at the summit can be chilly. Seriously, trust me I don’t care if it is July it’ll be cold up there.

6. Grindelwald First Flieger Zipline

If you’re craving a bit of adrenaline, the Grindelwald First Flieger Zipline is an absolute blast. You soar down the mountain on a cable at up to 84 km/h. The feeling of flying over the alpine landscape is pure exhilaration.

It starts at the First station, so after your hike to Bachalpsee or visit to the First Cliff Walk, you can head over and give it a try. It’s not just about speed—those sweeping mountain views as you zip down are unbeatable. You can find all the details and book your spot here.

7. Männlichen Royal Walk

Another one of my favorite easy hikes in the area is the Männlichen Royal Walk. You can take the cable car from Grindelwald to Männlichen, and from there, it’s just a short walk to the summit. The views from the top are nothing short of royal, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau mountain peaks all in view.

There are also fun informational signs along the way, explaining the local wildlife and geology. It’s a great option if you want stunning vistas without a strenuous hike.

8. Eiger Trail

For a more challenging hike, the Eiger Trail is a must for those who want to get up close to the legendary Eiger North Face. Starting at Eigergletscher station, this trail takes you along the base of the Eiger’s dramatic cliffs. The views are uniquely incredible, and you’ll likely see climbers scaling the sheer rock face as you hike.

The trail is moderately challenging and takes about two hours, but the scenery along the way makes it worth every step. Make sure to bring plenty of water and a camera—you’ll want to capture the epic views.

9. Aare Gorge

A bit of a drive from Grindelwald, but totally worth it, is the Aare Gorge. It’s about 45 minutes away by car or an easy train trip. Walking through this deep, narrow gorge is an awe-inspiring experience.

The path is built along the cliff, sometimes suspended over the river, and it’s crazy to see the power of the rushing water below. Steep walls rise up around you making it feel like you’ve stepped into another world. The walk takes about an hour, and it’s a great change of pace if you need a break from hiking.

10. Go Paragliding

Paragliding in Grindelwald is a once in a lifetime experience. Seriously, think about seeing the Swiss Alps from a bird’s-eye view. The thrill of launching off a mountainside and soaring above the picturesque valley, with the Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau peaks all around is only available here.

Most paragliding tours in Grindelwald are tandem flights, meaning you’ll be flying with an experienced pilot, so no prior experience is necessary. The typical flight lasts about 15-30 minutes, depending on weather conditions.

The cost for a tandem paragliding flight in Grindelwald usually ranges from CHF 160 to CHF 200 per person ($180 to $220 USD), depending on the company and the length of the flight. Yes, this is expensive, so budget ahead if you want to do it. Some companies offer packages to truly remember the experience that include photos or videos for an additional fee.

Most tours start with a short briefing and a cable car ride up to the launch site, such as First or Männlichen, and the entire experience, from start to finish, typically takes around 1.5 to 2 hours. Paragliding is offered year-round, but summer and early autumn provide the best weather and visibility. It’s one of the best ways to truly appreciate the majesty of Grindelwald!

For those that are still considering a visit to Switzerland I’m telling you to do it! Once there, consider making your way to Grindelwald (not just an evil Harry Potter character) as it is a perfect launching point for so many different and thrilling activities.
